The past few entries in the Courage blog have discussed surrender: will we surrender to our inner selves, or will we ignore the very core of our being?
If you surrender to your inner self, you are going the other way and taking a road less traveled. If you ignore where your heart is telling you to go, you are surrendering to the slots others have assigned you.
Both are easy and both are hard. It is supremely difficult to turn you back on your dreams. It is difficult to choose a road less traveled because so few people do it. Both become easier with time.
Those working The Project have chosen to follow their hearts and trust their instincts because their hearts are telling them where to go and their instincts are telling them how to get there. Surrendering may have been hard at first, but in time they found themselves living in step – instead of fighting – their inner self. They are leading the life they are meant to lead.

Recently, in the Courage blog, we’ve been talking about surrendering: surrendering to your inner self and the life you were put on this planet to lead.
It is seldom easy to show courage, which can be defined as:
The ability to do something that frightens one.
Courage is required almost everywhere: the courage to stand up for yourself at work, the courage to distance yourself from someone toxic to you, the courage to say no.
Charting your own course takes courage because to some the prospect is frightening. After all, you are breaking away from the herd and going the other way. But for those working The Project, it is frightening only at first. Armed with the wisdom of knowing the life they must lead, the courage to follow that path is easily mustered because life’s great prize is living the life you are meant to lead.
Those who get on in this life – including those on The Project – have the courage to surrender to their inner self. Their heart is telling them where to go; all they have to do is follow it.

Last time in the Courage blog, we talked about how The Project is, at heart, showing the courage to surrender yourself to something bigger than yourself, to dismiss outside influences, and connect to your inner self.
Sometimes, that is easier said than done, because it takes courage to say no to outside influences. Every day, seventy times seven distractions are looking to veer us off our path. All we have to do is let them: the car breaks down; kids need to go to practice; friends and family offer revels that seem more exciting than belonging to yourself.
For those on The Project, their paths are the only distraction, distracting them from the petty cares and superfluities of daily life. Things that cause knee-jerk reactions from others adherents dismiss out of hand. Their courage to surrender themself to themselves is evident every day.

Part of the courage required for The Project is the courage to surrender yourself to something bigger than yourself, something bigger than merely getting by, something bigger than simply existing on this planet.
It is not always easy to show this courage. It means going the other way, breaking away from the heard, taking a road less traveled. Some are not comfortable with this and surrender to supernatural aid and comfort. They will connect with an organized religion, adhere to a sacred text, surrender some money in the hopes of an afterlife. Compliance provides comfort.
For those working The Project, courage means dismissing outside influences and connecting with their inner self. They have looked themselves squarely in the eye and surrendered not to the supernatural, but to the natural inside them. They have exchanged the superfluous for the anchor of their inner self.

Jesse Cole, the founder of the Savannah Bananas baseball team – a comparison to the Harlem Globetrotters is apt – said the business stemmed from asking, “What if…?”
It’s an excellent question, because it is the root of all progress in life, both collectively and individually. Collectively, it’s how civilization has advanced since time immemorial.
– Someone asked “What if we went over that hill?”
– President John F Kennedy asked “What if we went to the moon?”.
– Sam Walton asked “What if we sold a lot of things for smaller profit?”
Asking “What if…” is how we advance individually, too.
– “What if we stopped reacting to outside influences?”
– “What if we stopped fitting into the slots others assign us?”
– “What if we followed our heart?”
Those who act on these questions are the ones who get on in this life. They are the ones who had the courage to answer to their inner selves, the ones who dismissed the slots assigned by others, the ones who followed their hearts.
They have the courage to live the life they were put here to live. They are the ones looking back on and forward to time well spent. They are on their paths. Everyday they ask “What if…?”.

Here is a novel thought: be your own trend.
This is not always easy because at any given time there are 70 times seven trends in this world. They come and go and when their time has passed there are new trends to replace them. Those living scattered, wayward lives spend their time answering to them. Their soul has no peace because they are living from the outside in. The dictates of their inner self are ignored.
Those maximizing their time on this planet do not acknowledge trends because they have the courage to be their own trend, and the passing of days on their path is the only trend they follow. They have, rather courageously, broken away from the herd to follow the dictates of their inner self.
The courage we speak of here at The Project is, at its root, the courage to be yourself. It’s what allows us to live the life were were put here to live.
So go, be your own trend. The only trend you should follow comes from your heart.

When people think of courage, they often think of individuals climbing mountains, facing down lions, or doing what needs to be done in combat.
Fair enough, because courage is required there. For those working The Project, however, courage means something different: it means climbing the stone steps of your life, facing down yourself, and doing what needs to be done to maximize your time on this planet.
All of us were issued assorted talents at birth, and all of us were put here for a reason. Those who get on in this life – those looking back at time well-spent – have the wisdom to know that reason and the courage to go and maximize their talents.
We can do no less. If we are going to look back on – and forward to – time well-spent, we must have the courage to live the life we are meant to live. And we must do it every day. We can’t do it today and not tomorrow. Not this week but not next week. Every day means every day, from the time we make the commitment to ourselves until our day is done.
Courage does not refer to mustering the strength to climb mountains or to stand up to bullies. Courage refers to finding the strength, the courage, to live the life you were put here to live.

Courage can be something that is not always easy to muster. Sometimes it means going in a different direction than others and it can mean unfamiliar territory and feelings.
Good. This is how worthwhile lives are built, lives that are looked back on with satisfaction, because someone decided to make their time serve them instead of merely serving time while here.
We are all born with the courage to do what needs to be done, though seem think it belongs to other people.
Nothing is further from the truth!
Courage is nothing more than acting on what we know needs to be done and all of us can muster the courage to live the life we were put here to live. Ultimately, it comes down to one question: are we going to live the life others want and expect us to live, or are we going to live the life we expect us to live?
It is the hardest of questions. But, really, it is the only question that matters. Those who answer positively are the ones who get on in life and look back on, and forward to, time well spent.

Courage is the second aspect of the project, because it needs wisdom to be its most effective. Once we know the life we are meant to live, we must be courageous enough to go and live that life. We must live bravely, prepared to life life on our terms, and not live how others want us to.
